North East Tennessee has many incredible Attractions offering something for almost everyone and helping to make our area a desirable Family Vacation Destination. We have two exceptional History Museums, a Theatre presenting top quality plays and musical events, historical sites, wilderness areas, ecoagricultural locations such as a first class Winery and Organic Farm & Music Venue, the third cleanest lake in America and one of the best motorcycle routes in the entire country.

Welcome Center

Our Welcome Center is located in Mountain City and houses a great historical museum depicting the local heritage of Johnson County. Here you will learn about the ways of our historical rural life and rich musical history. To take a step back in time, be sure to visit this unique museum.

Butler Museum

This is a very unique museum that explores the relocation of the town of Butler making way for the creation of Watauga Lake. The displays in this museum will amaze you. Tours are available by appointments during the summer season.

Heritage Hall

This theatre is located in a restored turn of the century building and offers top notch theatrical productions and music events. Be sure to check out their calendar events for when you visit our area.

Johnson County Center for the Arts

This newly opened Johnson County Center for the Arts is worth the time to make a visit. You will find interesting art pieces and crafts from local artisans. There is also a wide variety of Art Classes taught at this Art Center.  It is located in the Downtown Historic Area of Mountain City and is within minutes of Doe Mountain.

Watauga Lake Winery

Our area is fortunate to have a first class mountain winery, which is right near Watauga Lake. It is a great place to tour, have some good food, enjoy events and drink some excellent wine. If you like to tour wineries put this on your calendar when you visit North East Tennessee.

Harbin Hills Farm

This is a functioning farm specializing in organic grown produce. They have an onsite store where you can purchase their variety of products. Be sure to check out their calendar of events, since they showcase some great local musicians on a regular basis during the summer season. Check them out on Face Book.

Watauga Lake

This large pristine lake is known as the third cleanest lakes in America. Most of the 110 miles of shoreline is protected from development, which is why it is such a clean and enjoyable lake. Here you find a variety of motor boat water sports, fishing, pontoon boat rentals and kayaking.

The Snake 421 Motorcycle Route

If you are a motorcycle rider you probably know about this famous motorcycle ride that offers some of the best riding in the United States. Enjoy this challenging route as you wind over a mountain ridge, cruise through a beautiful open valley, a peaceful National Forest, along a meandering creek and through some beautiful mountain farmland.


If you are a golfing enthusiast, you will want to bring your clubs and visit Red Tail Golf Resort in Mountain City which is the Johnson County Seat. This is a beautiful golf course that you will enjoy playing because of the outstanding views and challenging course. It will be a memorable experience.

Back Bone Rock

This Attraction is known as one of the shortest tunnels in the world. It is located in the Cherokee National Forest near the Virginia border. When you visit this unique rock formation be sure to climb the steps to the top of the rock tunnel.

Appalachian Trail

The famous 2,100 mile hiking trail meanders through our area offering some of the best hiking in the world. In our area this trail will take you along mountain ridges overlooking Shady Valley Tennessee, around pristine Watauga Lake and actually across the Watauga Dam and by incredible Laurel Falls.
