Hiking Trails & Map

The recreation area has some great hiking trails, and more are funded, but at this point our Hiking Only trails are difficult to navigate and not well marked. We plan to have some new trails formally opened by summer 2019! Hikers are, however, welcome on ALL trails.

There are many scenic trails to explore.  One suggestion would be to take the short  uphill intermediate-level walk to Chimney Rock Overlook to enjoy some great long range views of Roan Creek Valley and beyond to Asheville some days.

Trails 14 and 112 are open only to hikers and are non-motorized trails. As mentioned, both of these trails are hard to navigate and not well marked, so we suggest these trails to only experienced hikers seeking a more difficult adventure.

Day Hiking User Permits are just $3 and annual Hiking Permits are only $25. Our future plans are to continue to expand our Hiking Trail System and open our back country area for long hikes, back packing   and primitive camping.
